Henri Matisse was a French artist (1869-1954).  He is known for his use of color and his expertise as a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor. Matisse belonged to the group of artists known as the Fauvists,  along with artist Andre Derain. During his lifetime, Matisse evolved as an artist and experimented with form, pattern, color, and cut paper collage.
